Jun Kanno / Panda Kanno

 

 

Profile

Photographer. Born in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. After studying film at New York University (SPS), Kanno began her career focusing on portrait and landscape photography. In 2018, she relocated her studio from Tokyo to Fukushima, where she currently produces work centered on the "transformation of the land" in post-disaster Fukushima. She also works under the artist name "Panda Kanno" as a separate moniker.

 

 

Theme

The overarching theme across all her work is Time. She continuously explores this theme through diverse perspectives: visiting and photographing all her primary school classmates across Japan 20 years later; capturing summer coastlines where time appears to stand still amid unchanging scenery; and documenting 19 families and their homes in her hometown once a year over a 12-year period (2007–2018).

 

Side Note

The moniker "Panda Kanno" originated simply from her love for pandas, though she also intended it as an allusion to monochrome photography. However, photography is not merely black and white—it encompasses a vast spectrum of grey.
